Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes has been receiving rave early reviews, and interest appears to be cresting at the perfect moment as Wonder Woman winds down and Transformers: The Last Knight begins to lose its juice. 20th Century Fox has smartly avoided over-saturation and has gone for a more tempered, soul-stirring approach to its advertising campaign by not bludgeoning us with unnecessary trailers and clips.
The studio has just offered up the final heart-rending promo for the Apes saga sequel starring Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, Gabriel Chavarria and Amiah Miller, revealing Caesar's evolution into a charismatic leader and more lush cinematography and evocative imagery by Reeves and his DP, Michael Seresin (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). Its tone and scope feel operatic and intimate at the same time, and I'm eagerly awaiting an opening day screening on July 14.
Here's one more swing into the official synopsis before you peel back the curtain on the UK launch trailer:
“In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.”
