Metalheads of a certain age (myself included) are rejoicing today with news that Eddie, the zombified mascot of British rock gods Iron Maiden, has scored his own solo comic book series.
In a perfect pairing, Heavy Metal Magazine will publish Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, a five-part mini-series written by Llexi Leon and Ian Edginton with art from Kevin J. West and based on the mobile role-playing game. The premiere issue will blast into the pages of Heavy Metal #287 in July, and centers around the horrifying Eddie monster "as his soul is torn apart, becoming an epic quest across the wastelands of time and space so he can battle the legion of the Beast itself and claim the fragments of his soul back."
Eddie's gruesome visage was first featured on Iron Maiden's 1980 self-titled album with original vocalist Paul Di'Anno, and remains an integral part of the band's stage show and merchandising.
“As a lifelong fan of Iron Maiden, it is a privilege to publish the first comic giving a narrative to their iconic mascot, Eddie,” Heavy Metal’s Jeff Krelitz tells Nerdist. “When we discussed the potential of coming together on this project it was immediately clear that there was no better home for Iron Maiden than Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal’s nearly half-century-long history of either working with or launching the careers of only the most accomplished artists continues here with the amazing team Iron Maiden has working on this series.”
