After two seasons of swearing at our laptops when their batteries died in the middle of investigations, we finally wised up and looked for supplementary power sources. Luckily we happened upon the good people over at Battery Geek who supplied us with what they call, "the BMW of battery packs." Lofty talk for glorified coppertop but well deserved, it turns out, since this slim little powerhouse added up to 13 hours to our laptops' lives in the field. Even during cold nights when power drain can be drastic, the Battery Geek Power Station battled against the elements and allowed us to work. The recharge time for the unit itself is a respectable 6 hours, and since it supports nearly anything you can think to plug in, I'm considering hauling a massage chair and flat panel TV into the wild on future investigations.
