Helix: Important Eye Patched Characters
Poor Soren. He had one of his eyes eaten by everyone's favorite bickering mycotic couple, Cadmus n' Carol. But hey, now he sports a pretty cool makeshift eye patch that makes him look even more like a ragtag Dickens character. Totally streets. (Or, rather, totally woods).
Anyway, Soren's in good company when it comes to the ol' one-eye look. Here are some of our favorite characters that work the eye patch like nobody's business.
- Nick Fury
Samuel L. Jackson's already one of the coolest cats in Hollywood, but when he's in his Nick Fury get-up, he's somehow even cooler. Once a director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and now a rogue agent, Nick continues to be the leader and father figure of The Avengers.
Oh, and Sharknado 3 star David Hasselhoff once played Nick Fury, too. For real.
- Snake Plissken
Arguably Kurt Russell's most iconic role, Snake is the grimacing anti-hero of John Carpenter's Escape From New York and Escape From L.A.. We may never find out what happened to him in Cleveland (an oft-repeated vague reference by several supporting cast members), though we have a theory as to how he got that eye patch: He was born with it. No doubt.
- Colonel Saul Tigh
Remember this guy? The hard-drinking, ass-kicking military man of Syfy's own Battlestar: Galactica lost his eye during the Occupation of New Caprica … and if you're gonna lose an eyeball, it might as well have happened while fighting Cylons, right? Anyway, we dig the Colonel's beige variation in contrast to the traditional black.
- Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody
Mad-Eye is one of our all-time favorite Harry Potter characters thanks to Brendan Gleeson's spot-on interpretation of the temperamental Scottish wizard. Moody lost his eye, leg and part of his nose whilst battling the Dark Arts during the First Wizarding War; he would go on to teach the Defense Against the Dark Arts class during Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts (or would he …?).
- Elle Driver
Arguably the most vicious member of Bill's Deadly Viper Assassination Squad in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, Elle Driver had her right eye torn out by her master, Pai Mei, after she dared to call him a "miserable old fool." Elle went on to lose her left eye when she battled her rival, Beatrix (Uma Thurman). Not that's hardcore.
- Reuben J. 'Rooster' Cogburn
He's indeed a man of True Grit, and delightfully played by Jeff Bridges in the Coen Brothers' 2010 remake of the semi-classic Western.
Prior to that, the character was portrayed by not The Dude but The Duke in the 1969 original, and again in the 1975 sequel, Rooster Cogburn.
- Commander Francesca 'Franky' Cook
Commander Franky is in charge of a Royal Navy flying aircraft carrier in the alternate (ya think?) technologically advanced 1939 of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, one of the first major films to be shot entirely on a "digital backlot." Not surprisingly, Angelina Jolie makes an eye patch look like essential fashion.
- Steve 'Patch' Johnson
Patch from Days of Our Lives is an extremely important cultural figure. He's been through a lot: He got his eye gouged out in a fight with Bo Brady, took the fall for his father's murder when his sister actually did it, accidentally shot a Senator, had to deal with his brother raping his lady love Kayla, dealt with Kayla falling off a roof and losing her speech as a result (it happens), got a glass eye but broke it, fought racists, dealt with an ex-wife that came back from the dead only to end up dead dead, was shot and ended up with amnesia for 16 years so he couldn’t tell anyone that he was actually alive because they all thought he croaked. Plus, he's been arrested probably 19 times and he once dated a woman who had tattoos that were actually secret codes (how very Dominion). Also, she was named Britta and she wasn’t a water filtration system. Oh, and don't call him 'Patch' -- he prefers 'Steve.' At least he thinks he does. Sometimes.
