Hunters: Spotify Gets an Alien Agenda

Wednesday, March 9, 2016 - 07:00

Spotify: it's not just for music anymore.

The popular listening-and-sharing music platform will be put to sinister use in our upcoming series Hunters, utilized to send and receive coded messages by nefarious forces.

Those nefarious forces are alien terrorists, by the way, so how would you like to subscribe to that?

It's a bigger marketing/product placement deal than you usually see in a film or TV show, as it's a bit more elaborate than having, say, a Coke can on a table in a couple of scenes. Spotify will be a crucial element to the communication techniques of the aliens throughout the first season of Hunters, courtesy of a game-changing deal conjured by Hunters executive producer Gale Anne Hurd and showrunner Natalie Chaidez.

There's an interactive element as well, as there will be Spotify playlists curated by Lionel McCarthy, a sinister Hunter (and DJ) played by Julian McMahon. Spotify users will be able to enter a sweepstakes, "Crack the Code," in which they can attempt to decipher a secret code hidden within the playlists. Obviously when this thing goes live we'll point y'all towards it.

To kick things off, Syfy will offer an innovative experience at The Spotify House at SXSW on Thursday, March 17. Guests will enter a custom-built environment within the house where, using a branded tablet equipped with headphones and an Augmented Reality (AR) app, they can immerse themselves in the world of the show and experience what life as a Hunter is like. While listening to custom music from Hunters, participants will use the AR app to view sound waves throughout the space that will pulse to the music, mimicking how the Hunters see and communicate through sound.

The AR app will also be equipped with facial tracking technology which can transform attendees into Hunters through photos. Guests can share the experience on social media by creating short videos of the transformed environment and their augmented faces.

Music to your ears? Stay tuned for further details, and get ready for the Hunters premiere on April 11 at 10/9c.
