The first casting news from NBC’s upcoming Constantine series has trickled out, and it reveals that the studio is looking to cast one familiar face from the Hellblazer universe — along with two folks who are still a mystery.
The casting note comes via KSite TV, which is reporting that four open characters are about to be sent out to casting agencies. The characters include John Constantine (well, duh), along with Chas, Liv and Manny.
Now, as any fan of the DC comic likely noticed, “Chas” is most likely a reference to Frank William "Chas" Chandler, who was first introduced in Hellblazer #1. In the comic canon, Chas is a tough taxi driver who becomes close friends with Constantine. For those who saw the 2005 Keanu Reeves film, the character of Chas was reimagined as a younger character played by Transformers alum and public meltdown guru Shia LaBeouf.
As for those other two folks, they kind of have us stumped. The names “Liv” and “Manny” don’t seem like any obvious fits to existing comic characters, and it’s certainly possible that they could be unique creations for the TV series. There’s also no guarantee they’ll be main characters, either, since the two could just have some role that factors into the pilot that might not carry over to the series at large.
It’s nice to see that they do apparently plan to include Chas in the series, and we’re hoping they stick a little closer to the comics and avoid a LaBeouf-like recasting move. What do you think? Any guess who “Liv” and “Manny” might be?
