Though most geeks know him from his long-running Star Trek: The Original Series role as Sulu, George Takei has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in recent years — and this new documentary plans to chronicle his awesome, awesome life.
Along with the obvious Star Trek love, Takei has also been an outspoken proponent of LGBT rights in recent years, while his quirky sense of geek humor has made him a legit social media celebrity. The guy currently has 7 million likes on Facebook, and 1.23 million followers on Twitter. Not bad.
But before all that he spent part of his childhood in a World War II internment camp — and To Be Takei hopes to capture all the moments that made the man the wondrous fellow he is today. The film generated some buzz at Sundance, and is set to hit theaters Aug. 22.
