Last week, we saw leaked set photos of a very pale Johnny Depp on the set of Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, and everyone began to worry that he was playing some sort of vampire clown. A new official cast photo reveals that, at least indoors, he looks much more like a vampire should.
The new photo features the whole main cast—including Helena Bonham Carter, Michele Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green and Chloe Moretz—professionally photographed shortly before principal photography on the flick began. Here Depp, posing in the center and slightly to the back, looks much more like the television version of his character, vampire Barnabas Collins, with sunken eyes and pale (not white) face.
"I do remember, very vividly, practically sprinting home from school in the afternoon to see Jonathan Frid play Barnabas Collins," Depp told EW, which released the photo. "Even then, at that age, I knew—this has got to be weird."
For Burton, who marks his eighth collaboration with Depp on this film, the photo was a chance to capture something that drew him to the original Dark Shadows in the first place.
"I remember seeing a group photograph of the cast of the original series," he tells EW. "For me it captured the weird Dark Shadows vibe in a single image. I had a brief window of opportunity to have our cast present at the same time, the day before principal photography began. We decided to stage a similar picture instead of rehearsing, to see if we captured the Dark Shadows feeling."
So it seems the theory is valid that the whole mime-faced look we saw last week was just some sort of vampiric sun protection. At least we know (or think we know) that when he's not frolicking in the afternoon sun, Barnabas Collins will look pretty much like a vampire.
