Marvel just hired a director a week ago, but the early casting wish list for Doctor Strange has reportedly leaked — and the names at the top might just surprise you.
Deadline is reporting that the studio is eyeing a couple of fairly major stars to kick things off. The leading contenders? Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), which just goes to show they’re keeping their options very, very open.
Both guys are great actors, and Cumberbatch is a name that fans have been quietly whispering about for a while, but they have extremely different looks and styles. If anything, it just means that Marvel is still pretty early in the development process, and still trying to nail down exactly who the big-screen version of Stephen Strange will be.
We’d honestly feel pretty good with either pick, though the Cumberbatch option is a fascinating one.
In a fairly rare twist for Marvel, director Scott Derickson has managed to stay fairly under the radar with Doctor Strange the past week or so, since most attention is focused on the company’s troubled Ant-Man production in the wake of Edgar Wright’s departure. With that one finally back on track, look for Strange to catch a lot more buzz.
Here’s hoping this is just the beginning and we’ll have a lot more Doctor Strange details to keep us entertained soon.
