What's old is new again. The BBC has just announced that John Simm is regenerating back into the villainous character of The Master for Doctor Who's upcoming Season 10.
The Master is one of the most notorious banes of the Doctor on the time-tripping British series and a recurring character that has been portrayed by eight different actors since its introduction in 1971's "Terror of the Autons" episode. One of the more diabolically conniving iterations was played by John Simm from 2007-2010, prior to the memorable moments with Michelle Gomez in more recent years.
Steven Moffat, Doctor Who's writer and executive producer, was thrilled to re-introduce Simm to faithful fans:
"Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you'll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the DoctorIt’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash."
With Gomez also returning for Season 10 as The Master, Missy has obviously got some company coming along through the crowded corridors of time in the form of Simm's previous incarnation of the character, last seen in 2010 in the two-parter "The End of Time."
Here's what Simm had to say about his reunion with the Doctor Who cast and creators:
"I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series."
What do you think of this casting announcement, and will you be eager to see Simm back in the time stream against Peter Capaldi's Doctor when Doctor Who launches its tenth season on April 15 at 9/8c on BBC America?
