A few short weeks ago, we told you about the rumor that J.J. Abrams had his eye on Benicio Del Toro for, perhaps, the role of the villain for his Star Trek sequel. Today Abrams confirms he's very much interested in the Wolfman actor to get on board for the U.S.S. Enterprise's next adventure.
While on the Red Carpet for the release of Super 8 on DVD and Blu-ray, Abrams told MTV News:
"Well, we're just in negotiations, we're in discussions. It's not even negotiations—just in discussion. But I would love to work with him. I've wanted to work with him for years, and this felt like a good opportunity."
Abrams wouldn't specify which role he wants Del Toro for (speculations still range from the iconic role of Kirk's greatest enemy, Khan Noonien Singh, or a Klingon), but the director claimed that the actor was perfect for the role he had in mind for him, saying:
"It's too early to talk about what the role is, but he's such an amazing actor. He's so versatile. He could sort of do anything."
Then he joked:
"Except play Uhura. I wouldn't buy that."Whether or not Benicio Del Toro ends up on the Star Trek sequel still remains to be seen, but Abrams promises that the role will be much less mysterious when casting will be finalized:
"As soon as we know who it's going to be — and I'd love it to be him — that'll be public knowledge."
