If you've been hoping for a return of the Charles Addams classic, it looks like you're in luck.
It's been a while since the Addams Family had a truly enjoyable outing. Basically, anything beyond the two theatrically released films in the '90s has been iffy at best. And that's a shame, because the property is still more than worthy of great adaptation. The comic was great, the original TV series was the perfect anti-sitcom, and those first two '90s Sonnenfeld joints represent the best of that decade's attempts to remake classic TV properties for modern moviegoing audiences.
There was talk of a Tim Burton stop-motion animation film, but that dropped off the map in July. And we were actually fine with that because, really, wasn't Tim Burton a little on the nose for the Addams Family?
But now MGM has taken on the property and a Burton-adjacent team, BermanBraun, is working on it as an animated feature. The script is being penned by Pamela Pettler, who also wrote Corpse Bride, Monster House and 9. And while none of those films quite top anyone's lists of favorites, they all have this macabre elements to them, and each one is unique in its own way. So there's a chance we might actually get something fresh for the family Addams.
What we're saying is, we're cautiously optimistic. How about you? And, more importantly, what kind of Addams story do you think should be told?
