In the saddest Rick and Morty moment since Bird Person revealed that "wubba lubba dub dub" actually means "I am in great pain, please help me," Dan Harmon revealed that Adult Swim hasn't ordered a fourth season of the popular animated series. The news surfaced when a fan on Twitter responded to one of Harmon's leprechauns-centric tweets on St. Patrick's Day.

"Quit wasting time and go finish the next R&M season, you lazy alcoholic," cracked DJ Wise Pariah. "Run the Jewels can get the animators to make a music video, but we're waiting on them for the next season? Nah, we're waiting on you to finish writing it, like that f------ book."

DJ Pariah's comment about Run the Jewels is a reference to the fact that the hip-hop duo recently released a music video for their song "Oh Mama," which is set in the Rick and Morty universe.

Harmon responded with his usual wit and hard-biting sarcasm while also letting fans know that another season of his show is in the hands of the network:

It's strange that Adult Swim wouldn't have immediately ordered another season, even while the third one was still airing. The fandom for the show is incredible, and if the entire Szechuan sauce affair didn't adequately drive home that point, then we don't know what will.

One of the writers, Ryan Ridley, also claimed in early January that the network was dragging its feet when it came to getting Season 4 off the ground. If Adult Swim doesn’t order one at all, it will come as a great shock, but there’s still time for execs to — to gingerly paraphrase the colorful if cuss-tastic words of Morty Smith — get it all together and put it in a back pack, and if they gotta take it somewhere, they’ll take it somewhere.
