Remember when Coulson (Clark Gregg) decided to strike a deal with the Spirit of Vengeance to take down AIDA (Mallory Jansen) in the Season 4 finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Well, it looks like we’re about to find out what that mysterious deal actually entailed on the show’s upcoming landmark 100th episode.
According to the network, the episode titled “The Real Deal,” slated to air on March 9, will have Coulson finally come clean about the deal he made with the Ghost Rider so he could be temporarily possessed by the demon and put an end to AIDA. See: Exhibit A:
This in turn will have a huge impact on everyone on the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, with Gregg himself teasing via Entertainment Weekly in early January that the reveal will be something that will take the fans for a spin—especially considering it’s the 100th episode, so you know the show has to go big or go home. “Fans who hope that a 100th episode will contain something that will be a cataclysmic event or a gigantically resonate event for their feels after 100 episodes will not be disappointed,” said Gregg.
When the show returns from its month-long hiatus on March 2 in "All the Comforts of Home," the team will be back on Earth following their harrowing trip to space (and the future) with the goal to prevent the destruction of the world. We also know Coulson is dying and we learned from future Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) the team has to apparently let him die to prevent the end of the world. Knowing our S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, we're not sure they're going to leave that alone.
What is the role Coulson’s deal with the Ghost Rider plays with his present illness? Why does Team S.H.I.E.L.D. have to let him die in order to prevent Earth from exploding into huge chunks of rocks and almost destroying humanity in the process? Those questions will be interesting to see answered. What do you think that deal could be?
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on March 2 on ABC.
