We’re all well aware of some of the most enduring legends of horror, like vampires, werewolves, and their long-toothed ilk, but how many of us know the facts that root these stories to reality? Our darkest collective nightmares are usually based on something (often things) that actually happened, which is what Aaron Mahnke’s podcast, Lore, sought to explore.
The Apple “Best of” podcast for both 2015 and 2016 averages some 5 million monthly spins, but we’ll have to see how the concept translates to TV. I’ll certainly be giving it a chance, though, judging from the teaser below and some of the show’s proven producers — like Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead), Ben Silverman (The Office), and Glen Morgan (The X-Files) — its prospects are quite promising.
As you can see in the teaser, the new Amazon Original Series will utilize a ghastly mix of animation, narration, archival footage, and dramatic scenes — featuring the likes of Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Holland Roden (Teen Wolf), and Kristin Bauer van Straten (True Blood) — to deliver an all-encompassing and factually based history of fear, from changelings to body snatchers to satanically motivated dolls.
The animation was the first thing that caught my eye in the teaser, and the way it services the flow of Mahnke’s haunting yet accessible narration. It’s not a long trailer at all, but it’s packed with simple, alluring, yet still fear-mongering images, including the initial sequence that moves you from the grave to the asylum to the haunted mansion to the haunted forest — aka the stuff of nightmares.
Fittingly, Amazon Prime is set to deliver all six episodes of Lore this October, on Friday the 13th. Will you be brave enough to watch?
