With all the Marvel and DC properties already locked up, film studios are looking outside the box for the next genre hit — and they've landed on this alien-invasion tale.
Deadline reports that a film based on Mark Powers’ sci-fi comic Drafted is in development with Benderspink Productions, with aims to bring the militaristic story of an alien invasion to the big screen. The comic follows Earth’s first contact with aliens, who arrive to warn humanity of an impending alien invasion.
From there, the story has some nice twists and turns, as much of humanity unites to fight off the alien race and save humanity and the aliens who warned them. But (SPOILERS, POSSIBLY) humans eventually learn they might’ve been helping the wrong side all along.
This isn’t the first time a movie version of Drafted has entered development, as a late 2000s effort by New Line failed to escape development hell. Here’s hoping the second time’s the charm. Considering sci-fi is as big as ever, and comic adaptations haven’t (quite) reached the tipping point yet, it’d stand to reason that now could be the right time.
Drafted was launched in 2007 on Devil’s Due Entertainment, and a reboot of the comic is reportedly in the works and set to launch in 2015. Assuming the film gets off the ground, the new-look version of the comic could help generate some buzz for the property while the film winds its way through development.
