You have to love these little under-the-radar indie features that flutter past the mainstream box office and sometimes find an appreciative audience. Check out this reality-bending trailer for American Fable, the directorial debut of Anne Hamilton, an intern and acolyte of visionary filmmaker Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line).
An eerie intermingling of A Monster Calls, The Fisher King, Pan's Labyrinth and a hint of Stranger Things (we're sold), this trippy horror teaser blends the distinctions between dreams and reality when a Midwestern girl's nocturnal fantasies follow her back to the waking world. It features some alluring imagery and a sinister, surreal tone that recalls the work of her mentor Malick.

American Fable is a fairytale thriller set in the 1980s rural Midwest about a courageous girl living in a dark and magical world. When 11-year-old Gitty discovers that her beloved father is hiding a wealthy man in her family's silo in order to save their struggling farm, she is forced to choose between saving the man's life or protecting her family from the consequences of their actions.
Starring Peyton Kennedy, Richard Schiff, Kip Pardue and Marci Miller, IFC Midnight's American Fable arrives on Feb. 17.
