The Transformers writers’ room is cooking up several ideas for spinoff films and sequels, and it seems one of those concepts is nearing a green light. If you’re tired of all those darn human characters getting in the way, we have some great news.
Deadline reports the brain trust has generated a concept for an animated feature set on Cybertron, which will tell the origin story of the mythical planet from which the Autobots and Decepticons hail. The script will reportedly be penned by the same writers (at least some of them) behind Ant-Man, Andrew Barber and Gabrial Ferrari.
It’s an interesting idea, and fans have been clamoring for a story set on Cybertron ever since the first film came out eight years ago. Of course, it’ll be interesting to see if general audiences are as accepting of a project this straight-up sci-fi, without a human component (and Earth setting) to make it a bit more relatable.
We’re also curious about the description as an “animated” film. Does that mean it’ll be CGI (like a PG-style movie for kids, a la Pixar), or that it’ll be mostly digital effects — you know, like the Transformers characters are already in the live-action films? We could honestly see the advantages and disadvantages of both options, so it’ll be interesting to find out which direction they take it.
The full report notes this Cybertron story (as well as the upcoming Transformers 5) were among five pitches of a total nine that showed promise. What do you want to see from this project, and the rest of the lot?
