The Flash isn't on the air yet, but it's already set to add another classic DC Comics character to the cast.
Robbie Amell, cousin of Arrow star Stephen Amell and star of the now-canceled CW sci-fi series The Tomorrow People, has just joined the new CW superhero series as Ronnie Raymond, a character known to DC Comics readers as one half of the nuclear superhero known as Firestorm. Amell will first appear in the third episode of the series as a maintenance worker at S.T.A.R. Labs and fiance to Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker).
"Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and myself designed the pilot and series to include Ronnie (aka Firestorm) -- and to actually have someone with Robbie's talent playing the role is beyond exciting," executive producer Greg Berlanti said. "We can't wait for viewers and fans of the character to check it out."
In the comics, Raymond is a high-school student who, through a nuclear accident, is able to transform, along with another man, into Firestorm. Originally, the other half of Firestorm was physicist Dr. Martin Stein, but in the New 52 DC Comics reboot, Raymond instead fused into Firestorm along with fellow student Jason Rusch, with the help of a "God particle" that was created by Stein. We don't yet know what incarnation of Firestorm we might see on The Flash, and it might be a while before we see anything other than Raymond as a normal human being, but this certainly has the makings of even more superheroics in The CW's own little pocket DC Universe.
The Flash premieres Oct. 7.
