Before we knew Fox was bringing Fringe back for a fifth and final season, fans everywhere were buzzing about what might happen if the show were dumped before a proper finale was filmed. The cast mentioned that two endings were shot—just in case of cancellation—but the producers now say that is not the case.
John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop) had previously told reporters that two endings were in the works, but Fringe producer J.H. Wyman says multiple final scenes were considered, but only one was shot. So, sorry folks, you will not be able to get a peek at the alt-ending on DVD.
"No, we did not shoot an alternate ending," Wyman confirmed. "We thought about it, but we did not."
That makes the season-four finale all the more intriguing, knowing that it very well could have been the series' swan song.
Wyman said he's still holding out hope that Leonard Nimoy (Dr. William Bell) will come out of retirement for a final cameo in season five, but it's not absolutely necessary. As for a return to that awesome 2036 future world we glimpsed a few weeks ago? It could pop back up again before all is said and done.
"We definitely know where the series is going to end and how it's going to end and what we're saying with the final season," Wyman said.
