Archie goes to Bollywood! Variety is reporting Archie Comics and media company Graphic India have joined forces to produce a Bollywood-style live-action movie that will revolve around Archie Comics characters.

It will certainly be interesting to see a Bollywood spin on these beloved teens. There’s something about Bollywood cinema’s dazzling visuals and hyperrealism that lends itself to original stories and artwork. That’s not to say Graphic India won't take the source material somewhere slightly darker, similar to The CW’s success story Riverdale. That show had originally been conceived as a feature film for Warner Bros., and it stands to reason a great movie script in that world that has yet to be written. Bring on the Bollywood version!

There’s no official word yet on when production will start, and plot details are being kept under the radar, but we can expect a film that will borrow heavily from the comic book series. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Moose, and Jughead are also set to appear in the project, with an Indian cast playing the classic characters. Of course, it's also worth noting recent comic spinoffs have taken a more genre-tinged turn, with series like Vampironica and Afterlife With Archie.

“We are supremely excited to partner with the great team at Graphic India to bring Archie and his friends to Bollywood,” Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater told the site. “Archie’s lasting and growing presence in India made this move the logical next step as our stellar library of characters continues to expand into other media. It’s a major moment for Archie and its fans around the world.”

Sharad Devarajan, co-founder and CEO of Graphic India, added that they had some “exciting twists” planned on the classic comic book storylines, explaining that the characters “have held a special place in the hearts of Indians for decades, and we have no doubt that the new Indian cast of Archie and the gang will be an exciting moment for the country.”
