Considering the fact that he’s currently shooting a new Terminator sequel a full 30 years after he first played the beloved killing machine, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Arnold Schwarzenegger is open to reviving a few of his past hits.
Up next (maybe)? Running Man. The 1987 film was an adaptation of Stephen King’s early novel of the same name, and Schwarzenegger revealed in a recent Q&A that he’s heard “rumblings” the franchise could return with a sequel.
Here’s the choice excerpt via Digital Spy:
“It’s an honor to be asked back after all these years, back to the franchise [Terminator]. This is really wild… They’re doing a Twins sequel, to be called ‘Triplets’ I’ve read the first draft. There’s rumblings of a new ‘Running Man’ movie, so it’s a great honor to be asked back… [Getting in shape for these sequels] comes back to bodybuilding, I’m used to doing cardiovascular training every day. Therefore I’m still in good shape, and I can do the action and have the energy to do these movies.”
We love Running Man as much as anyone, but the film is definitely a relic of the 1980s, especially when you consider that the crazy future imagined in the film takes place in 2018. So yeah, it’s hard to imagine exactly how they could conceivably revive the franchise as a continuation without going the semi-reboot route.
But on the flip side, we live in a world where reality TV is king and The Hunger Games is the biggest franchise at the box office. So who’s to say there isn’t room for some execution game show weirdness?
What do you think? Would you like to see Running Man brought back to life?
