John Wick co-director David Leitch, (Deadpool 2) is preparing to set loose Charlize Theron's Atomic Blonde upon the world on July 28, and now Focus Features has just unchained the first butt-whippin' clip to absorb.
Adapted from Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s superspy graphic novel, The Coldest City, the film stars Theron as a wicked British assassin during the end of the Cold War. The Prometheus star is joined by a capable cast including John Goodman, Toby Jones, James McAvoy and The Mummy's Sofia Boutella.
While watching this and other teasers and trailers for this film, I'm struck with an uppercut of deja vu, and it's hard not to recall other similar fare like Kingsman: The Secret Service, Wanted and Salt when observing Theron's Lorraine Broughton in full assassin action. While it's splashy and hip, there's a certain level of overlap in the material that could prove troubling in the crowded summer market. Whatever happens, Theron's enduring star power will be put to a rigorous test.
Here's the official synopsis and bone-crunching clip below, set to the tune of George Michael's "Father Figure."
A high-stakes, global action-thriller that takes place in the city of Berlin, on the eve of the Wall’s collapse and the shifting of superpower alliances. Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) portrays Lorraine Broughton, a top-level spy for MI6, who is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for reasons unknown. She is ordered to cooperate with Berlin station chief David Percival (James McAvoy of X-Men), and the two form an uneasy alliance, unleashing their full arsenal of skills in pursuing a threat that jeopardizes the West’s entire intelligence operation.
