One actress confirmed, one rumored as Avengers: Infinity War draws near

With production on Avengers: Infinity War getting underway, intriguing names are starting to surface as part of the film's jumbo-sized cast.

We already know that the movie is going to encompass a heck of a lot of characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it's already been established that all the current Avengers will show up, along with Thanos, Bucky Barnes, Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Captain Marvel. We've also had an inkling for some time that at least some of the Guardians of the Galaxy will make an appearance as well, with Chris Pratt's Peter Quill leading the way. Now we have confirmation of a second Guardian joining the fray ...

While speaking with MTV News at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Zoe Saldana confirmed that she is slated to return as Gamora in the Avengers sequel, saying, "I don’t know when they're gonna let me read [the script]. I mean, I’m not looking forward to the five hours of green makeup, but every time I finally arrive on set I feel so happy and lucky to be there."

It makes sense that, out of any of the Guardians, Gamora should be in the film; she is, after all, one of the daughters of the story's chief villain, Thanos, and it wouldn't be surprising to see that relationship play out as the Avengers attempt to stop the Mad Titan from destroying the universe with the Infinity Stones. We still don't know if other characters from the Guardians movies -- like Drax, Rocket, Groot, Yondu or Nebula -- will show up (although the latter is also a good bet, also being a daughter of Thanos), but it seems to be a pretty sure thing.

A little more interesting, because it wasn't necessarily expected, is a report from the UK's Daily Record that has Liv Tyler listed among the cast members who will turn up in Scotland, where a large chunk of Avengers: Infinity War will be filmed starting at the end of February. Tyler played Betty Ross, the love interest of Dr. Bruce Banner, way back in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, a film that is sort of the forgotten child of the MCU. Of course, Banner was played in that film by Edward Norton, so Tyler has never acted opposite the current Banner/Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, and her character has never been mentioned again since then -- although her father, General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, appeared in Captain America: Civil War, played by the same actor who played him in 2008, William Hurt.

Could Liv Tyler be reprising her role as Betty in Avengers: Infinity War? With the movie offering a culmination to the first three phases of the MCU, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that every major character from the first decade of movies could conceivably surface. As for what role she would play in the story, that's a mystery yet to be solved.

Avengers: Infinity War opens on May 4, 2018.
