A&E's Bates Motel is going out with a bang. Next year will mark its fifth and final season and it's pulling out all the stops. Season 4 pretty much cemented Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) as the unhinged killer we all know from Psycho. With his evolution almost complete, there's only one thing left to do -- introduce Marion Crane.
Crane was famously played by the late Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock's classic film. A&E has hired a current superstar to bring their version of the character to life. The creators confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con, that singer and actress Rihanna will fill those fateful shoes.
Rihanna appeared at the panel via video to announce the news.
"We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate," said executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin.
Season 4 Spoiler alert
Vera Farmiga will return as Norma Bates despite meeting her demise at the end of last season. Max Thieriot (Dylan Massett) will make his directorial debut, while Nestor Carbonell (Sheriff Alex Romero) will direct for a third time. Also, Highmore will co-write his second episode alongside Ehrin and Cuse.
It's a lot to take in, but you have a while to process it. Bates Motel won't return until 2017.
What do you think of Rihanna as the new Marion?
