So is he Stephen Strange, or isn't he? Well ...
There have been an awful lot of rumors surrounding a Doctor Strange movie. Besides its seeming inevitability, though, we're pretty much in the dark. It's probably not going to be Johnny Depp in the role. Probably, but that was about as far as it had gotten for a while.
Then rumors started popping up that, at San Diego Comic-Con, in hell itself Hall H, Marvel would be announcing Benedict Cumberbatch is signed on to play Doctor Strange.
So MTV went to the source. But when Cumberbatch was asked if he's been approached to play the role of the Sorcerer Supreme, did he give anything even approaching a direct answer? Almost. Sort of, kind of. Basically? Watch for yourself:
So the first answer is "As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called Hamlet in London." Which, okay. Fair. So that's a no then, right? "So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?"
What do you mean "who knows?" You said Hamlet, Cumberbatch. Hamlet. Too busy. Denmark. Shakespeare. Hamlet.
So, just to be clear, were there ever any talks at all about the possibility of him playing Doctor Strange?
"I couldn’t possibly comment."
The devil you are, sir.
So, this just in -- Benedict Cumberbatch is probably too busy trying to catch the conscience of the king to play Doctor Strange. Unless he's lying. Which he could be. But probably not. Unless he is. Who knows, though. He can't say.
