James Remar is moving from one DC Comics TV universe to another. After playing James Gordon's uncle, corrupted by the Court of Owls, on Gotham last season, Remar will jump onto the cast of Black Lightning as a series regular, The CW announced at the panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
Remar plays "Peter Gambi, the oldest friend of Jefferson Pierce (series star Cress Williams). Gambi is Jefferson’s father figure, mentor and 'tailor.' His history with Jefferson goes back farther and deeper than anyone knows, and Gambi’s role in Jefferson’s life will become a painful window into the past that will affect the future of their relationship forever."
Sounds like Remar will be heavily on the inner circle of Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning's "other" life.
Actor Damon Gupton also joins the cast as a series regular. The actor is a veteran at playing police detectives, and he's playing... a veteran police detective! Gupton is "Inspector Henderson, a veteran officer of the law who is now the highest-ranking detective on the force. His role in the community puts him at odds with Black Lightning (Williams), but they soon become unlikely allies." Every good vigilante superhero needs their own "Jim Gordon" type after all (see how we came full circle there?).
Black Lightning will be a mid-season premiere for The CW, and no exact release date has been announced yet. While it's under the purview of Greg Berlanti (with Salim Akil, Mara Brock Akil, and Sara Schechter), it sounds like it'll be in a separate universe (or at least alternate universe) from the core "Arrowverse" series.
