Black Panther now highest pre-selling superhero movie ever

While Black Panther already smashed through records set by its own company, it’s now pushing past its rivals across the superhero divide. After outselling Captain America: Civil War in pre-sales among all Marvel films, it’s now topped Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice to become Fandango’s top-selling superhero film of all-time.

According to Deadline, Black Panther is at the top of the daily seller charts even though the film doesn’t open to the public for another two weeks — which means anticipation for the film is huge. Predictions were already high for Black Panther’s opening weekend, but that may even be below the mark, considering the film is outperforming in early sales.

BvS made $166 million in its opening weekend while Civil War garnered $179 million, which makes predictions for a $120 million opening for Black Panther seem conservative at best, especially considering that it has the Presidents Day holiday weekend to stretch that haul.

That puts it squarely in the realm of surprise hit Deadpool, which debuted on the same weekend but with far more of a niche appeal (albeit with the added novelty of being an R-rated, silly, violent superhero film). But Black Panther’s been steadily building buzz as a stand-alone movie while still having the built-in importance that goes with any pre-Infinity War film.

Reactions to the film have already been hugely positive, which bodes well for the hype to be sustained by word-of-mouth after the film hits theaters. Despite all these clues, the real numbers won’t turn up until Black Panther debuts on Feb. 16.
