The Black Panther marketing blitz is coming hot and heavy now, and the latest featurette to emerge from Marvel focuses on the amazing women who help keep the king of Wakanda on his throne.
The previous video feature issued by Marvel earlier this week was all about T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and how he takes on the responsibilities of being the ruler of his reclusive, technologically advanced African nation. In a new look at the film, we get to hear more about the powerful women who stand alongside him: Okoye (Danai Gurira), the head of Wakanda's all-female security force the Dora Milaje, and Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), who acts as an undercover spy for the Dora Milaje out in the world, reporting back on what she observes.
According to Nyong'o, Okoye represents tradition while Nakia takes a new approach to dealing with the outside world and the safety of Wakanda, a dynamic which is likely to cause tension and intrigue as T'Challa listens to the advice of both women.
Along with that bit of character insight, the new featurette also showcases footage of the Dora Milaje in action, and trust us when we say that this is a fighting force that no one in their right mind — not even usurper to the throne Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) — should want to mess with.
While Black Panther is making headway as the first film to center around a superhero of color, it should also be noted that these incredible women — women of color — are also a major part of what makes this film feel so special and groundbreaking. Check out the featurette below. Black Panther is out in theaters just over a month from now, on February 16, 2018. Better get your tickets fast.
