In modern pop-culture history, there have been a lot of significant summers -- the birth of the blockbuster with Jaws, the year The Avengers launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, of course, the glorious arrival of Star Wars. For our money, however, there's one movie summer that stands head and shoulders above them all: 1984. For fans of sci-fi, fantasy and supernatural horror, it was a year chock-full of would-be franchise launchers, classics like The Neverending Story and Gremlins and super-mega classics like Ghostbusters. It also saw some changes come down the pike that would alter the path of big-money movie-making forever.

Now, 30 years later, we wanted to take a look back at what made '84 special. Watch below as host Nicki Clyne takes us on a whirlwind tour of the films, the fandom and the seismic changes that set the stage for the world we know today.
