Now in its ninth season, Supernatural remains one of The CW’s best-performing series — so it’s no surprise they want to make a spinoff. Luckily for us, they’re not giving up yet.
The network is knee-deep in its pickup, renewal and cancellation cycle, and has reportedly decided not to move forward with the proposed spinoff series Bloodlines. The Vampire Diaries-esque pitch was introduced in a backdoor pilot a few weeks ago, much to the disdain of Supernatural fans.
It wasn’t terrible, but it was too much of a shift from what makes Supernatural such a compelling show. The Chicago-set story didn’t have much heart, and all the characters and soapy love stories seemed a bit too paint-by-numbers. The episode was at its best when Sam and Dean occasionally popped up, and that’s never a good thing when you’re trying to seed a spinoff.
But just because Bloodlines is dead, that doesn’t mean The CW has given up on expanding the Supernatural franchise. The Wrap is reporting that the network is still open to a spinoff, meaning they could generate a new pitch and give a different backdoor pilot a shot at some point next season.
Here’s hoping it’ll stay far, far away from the five monster families in Chicago. On the plus side, maybe Sam and Dean head back to the Windy City next season to take out all those whiny monsters.
What type of Supernatural spinoff would you like to see in the future?
