Looks like Warner Bros. has been listening to repeat criticism that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was too dark (and that the movie sucked) because they’ve just tapped a new writer to pen a screenplay for a movie featuring one of DC Comics’ most fun characters.
Birth.Movies.Death reports that Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class, the upcoming Power Rangers movie) is currently writing the script for a Booster Gold movie and that the man who's currently in charge of the Arrowverse (the DC Universe on TV), Greg Berlanti, will be producing with an eye to directing the superhero film. Seems that a recent appearance by Stentz on Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman podcast pretty much comfirmed it but until we hear anything official grain. of. salt.
UPDATE: Greg Berlanti has just confirmed his and Stentz's involvement with the Booster Gold movie in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “I'm attached to a few films [at Warner Bros.] now, and one, Booster Gold, is a DC property. Zack Stentz, who wrote an episode of Flash last year, just got the job, so he's writing the script now. I'd probably direct that, or I would want to.”
The character was created in 1986 and first appeared in the pages of Booster Gold #1. Real name Michael Jon Carter, Booster Gold was initially depicted as a glory-seeking show-off who stole a TARDIS time machine along with some futuristic tech (which included a Legion of Superheroes flight ring) and came back to the modern day to use said future tech with his knowledge of the future to become super rich and famous. He ultimately became a true hero and was a member of the Justice League.
The character has often been associated with Blue Beetle, who became his BFF, and the two of them came up with some zany, crazy-@$s schemes and plans over the years. The site reports that the fact that the movie is now in development:
“Backs up the whispers I have heard that Warner Bros - and especially Ben Affleck - are very hip to what went wrong with BvS, and that the opportunity exists to fix the larger universe.”
Back in March, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns hinted that the studio had some big plans for Booster Gold and that fans should see something soon, saying:
“You’ll see [Booster Gold] very soon, and there’s talks about…there’s actually a lot of plans for Booster Gold, one of my favorite characters. But yeah, Booster Gold fans, you will definitely be happy with what we’ve got coming up in the years ahead.”
Although rumor was that the character would pop up on The CW's DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the fact that Booster Gold is heading to the big screen could mean we won’t see him join the crew of the Waverider alongside his son Rip Hunter (played by Doctor Who alum Arthur Darvill) anytime soon since the WB likes to keep their cinematic and TV universes separate. But hey, we do have two Flashes zooming their way across the big (Ezra Miller) and small (Grant Gustin) screen so who knows?
The movie is currently on hold and it looks like it will be a solo movie -- not the Booster Gold/Blue Beetle team-up movie we’ve been hoping for. At least, seems like Warner Bros. got the message that it’s high time time to lighten up the DCEU. Are you excited to see that a Booster Gold movie is one step closer to happening? Who would be your casting dream choice?
