There’s a rumor making the rounds that Sony Pictures’ upcoming Spider-Man spinoff movie Venom, starring Tom Hardy in the titular role of anti-hero Eddie Brock, will feature a Marvel Comics character boasting some pretty close ties to Brock and the alien symbiote.
According to the Hashtag Show, the studio is looking to cast an actress in the role of Ann Weying, Eddie Brock’s ex-wife who became a temporary host to the symbiote and turned into She-Venom, aka the Bride of Venom. The character was created by David Michelinie and artist Mark Bagley for the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #375 in 1993.
Ann Weying was a lawyer in the comics, but Sony has apparently not committed to her backstory just yet. The site reports that “the studio, working with a new script from Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, is looking to cast an actress in the range of 25-32, so a few years younger than Hardy, to play the role of Ann. In the comics, Ann was shot by one of the characters who took the name Sin-Eater, only to have her life saved by the symbiote. It set off a series of events that lead to her depression and suicide.”
They also “expect the symbiote to be the Ultimate version which was a bio suit co-created by the fathers of Eddie Brock and Peter Parker. Given the casting of Hardy in the lead role, it’s likely that they may play up some of Brock’s insanity giving Hardy a chance to show some range and do what he does best.”
To be directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, the R-rated comic book movie may not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will still exist in the same world as Spider-Man: Homecoming, with the villain of the piece said to be serial killer Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage. Now, whether Ann Weing/Bride of Venom will ultimately appear in the Venom movie remains to be seen (consider this a rumor for now), but if true, it’s definitely an interesting move from Sony.
Venom opens in movie theaters Oct. 5, 2018. Who would be your top pick for the role of Ann Weying/She-Venom alongside Tom Hardy?
