Captain Marvel might have finally found a worthy adversary, as Ben Mendelsohn is in talks to play the main villain in the upcoming MCU film. According to Variety, that may come in the extraterrestrial shape-shifting form of a Skrull, as Fiege revealed at SDCC that the alien race would be the featured villains in the Brie Larson starrer.
What's a Skrull, you ask? Skrulls made their first appearance in the second Fantastic Four issue by Stan "The Man" Lee and Jack "The King" Kirby in 1962. The Captain Marvel film could be the film that paves the way for the Secret Invasion storyline after Avengers: Infinity War Part II. Secret Invasion was one of the first striking crossover events that featured the Skrulls as a significant threat. In 2008, Brian Michael Bendis wrote the eight-issue event with art by Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales on inks, and colored by Laura Martin.
The film's directors — Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck — worked with Mendelsohn on their well-received 2015 drama, Mississippi Grind. Recently, Mendelsohn played another infamous Big Bad, Orson Krennic, in the highly successful Star Wars prequel Rogue One, and starred in Netflix's Bloodline original series.
Mendelsohn would join Larson's Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury as the only stars confirmed for Marvel's 2019 first female-led production.
What do you think, will Orson Krennic make a good Skrull?? Let us know in the comments!
