Sharp-eyed viewers of Star Wars: The Last Jedi images and previews have noticed that the film is resplendent with jewels, gems and general bling.

Luke Skywalker is rumored to wear a red crystal some are speculating to be Darth Vader's Kyber crystal, which would have been the heart of his lightsaber. Snoke is also seen wearing a giant black ring, also thought to be a Kyber crystal by some fans. Kyber crystals are so in this season. And new character Rose (played by Kelly Marie Tran) sports a necklace the actress says is "significant to Rose's backstory."

So why all the jewelry? Did the Star Wars franchise get into a sponsorship deal with Neil Lane á la The Bachelor? Or was there something far more heroic at play?

Yes, according to director Rian Johnson, Carrie Fisher herself was the impetus for what should now only be referred to as "space jewelry."

Kyber crystals are out; space jewelry is in. What Carrie says goes. Heavens knows our girl loved to accessorize.
