Another day, another casting news roundup. Two major big-screen projects and an upcoming sci-fi TV series have added several members to their respective casts. Who is joining what?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Haze (Only the Brave) has come on board Sony's Spider-Man spinoff Venom in a mystery role. He’ll be joining Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Marvel antihero Eddie Brock/Venom, Riz Ahmed (Rogue One), Michelle Williams (Shutter Island), Jenny Slate (Comrade Detective), and Reid Scott (Veep).

Venom will be facing off against Carnage, who has been confirmed as the movie’s Big Bad. The finger has been pointed at Ahmed playing the villainous role for a while now, but the studio apparently said that wasn't the case. Could it be that Haze will be the one playing Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage?

Sitting in the director’s chair is Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), who will be directing from a script penned by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji), Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower), and Kelly Marcel (Terra Nova). Venom opens on Oct. 5, 2018.

Director Neil Marshall’s (Dog Soldiers, Game of Thrones) new Hellboy movie has added not one but three members to its expanding cast. Deadline reports Sophie Okonedo (Aeon Flux, Doctor Who), Brian Gleeson (Assassin’s Creed), and Alistair Petrie (Rogue One) have signed on for the third Hellboy movie, which will also serve as a reboot.

Okonedo will play Lady Hatton, a “resident seer at the Osiris Club, an ancient English club dedicated to uncovering supernatural mysteries.” Gleeson will be playing the wizard Merlin, while Petrie stars as Lord Adam Glaren, a “high-ranking member at the club.”

The Lionsgate/Millennium Films production currently stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) as the Blood Queen, Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as Ben Daimio, Ian McShane (American Gods) as Professor Broom, and Penelope Mitchell (The Vampire Diaries) as Ganeida. No release date has been secured yet.

Hulu’s upcoming sci-fi drama The First, starring Sean Penn (Mystic River) and Natascha McElhone (Designated Survivor), will be adding LisaGay Hamilton (House of Cards), Oded Fehr (The Mummy), and James Ransone (Bosch) to the series, slated to debut on Hulu and Channel 4 in the UK sometime next year, reveals Deadline (here and here).

The series, penned by Beau Willimon (House of Cards), follows the first mission to colonize Mars. The First will be focusing on the astronauts leading the mission, their families and friends, as well as the ground team back at home. Hamilton will play “an astronaut who is second in command and always puts the mission first.”
