As of this writing, the upcoming thinking person's sci-fi film, Arrival, has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Which probably means one thing -- you'll be seeing it.
But before you do, before you sit down to contemplate what an examination of the complexity of human language means through the lens of alien contact, there is the question of alien languages themselves. We've invented quite a lot of them over the years. Languages for aliens both logical and warrior, corrupt and peaceful. Whether it's Middle-earth or a galaxy far, far away, one of the the best ways to ground the worlds of science fiction and fantasy is through language.
What are the best fake foreign tongues, though? Which stand above the rest? Which are emblematic of the whats, the whys, and the hows of language creation?
