The current issue of Empire Magazine is filled with X-Men scoops. The latest comes from producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who wants to revamp one of the comics' biggest characters. She has her eye on Remy LaBeau, better known as Gambit. The last time we saw him on the big screen, he was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
As we all know, Gambit's inclusion in Wolverine's story seemed forced. He was written as a one-dimensional side character, when he's so much more. The Cajun mutant has a tumultuous history and a legendary romance with Rogue. Both were completely ignored in X-Men Origins. Shuler Donner is ready to right some of the franchise's wrongs.
"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum," Shuler Donner reveals. "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."
Tatum was actually supposed to play Gambit in X-Men: The Last Stand, but the character was cut. It's fair to say he dodged a bullet with that one. But the actor is a card-carrying (no pun intended) fan of the superhero team. While promoting White House Down last year, Tatum stated, "I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real."
Shuler Donner has nothing against Kitsch's version of the character, but she wants to show more of Gambit's personality. "Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy, " she says. "He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.”
That's the kind of Gambit we want too. Make it so! Just for old times' sake, here's one of our favorite scenes from X-Men: The Animated Series. It features Gambit's signature line.
Could you see Tatum as the next Gambit?
