Charles Barkley is the most confused Jedi master ever in SNL’s unaired short for The Mos Eisley Five

As a Jedi Master, Charles Barkley may not understand what the bleep is going on once he’s set foot inside the Mos Eisley cantina. But in this J.J. Abrams-introduced clip, which NBC dropped as an unaired add-on from this week’s Saturday Night Live, he’s definitely the comedic glue holding everything together.

Sporting an oddly impressive Bride-of-Frankenstein hairdo but a complete inability to comprehend anything anybody’s saying in the multi-species, multi-lingual spaceport, Barkley’s robed Jedi master muddles his way through a hostage negotiation gone terribly wrong before finally throwing his hands up and quitting on his four Rebel compatriots with an exasperated “F*** this!”

Abrams set the whole thing up as a fake followup to Solo: A Star Wars Story, pitching the plot as “the story of a group of smugglers hired by the Rebellion who are instrumental in establishing the Rebel base on Hoth.” What they’re doing in Mos Eisley, then, isn’t clear — but after watching Barkley hilariously stammer the one alien phrase he knows while trying not to get himself killed, we aren’t complaining about logical loopholes.

Barkley, a guy who manages to be funny even when he isn’t trying especially hard, steals the scene when he confesses that he had no idea his Wookiee companion — whom he calls “the dog guy” — was capable of speech, or of understanding anything people say.

“I thought he was just making dog noises,” the befuddled Jedi admits. “Man, I’ve said a lot of stuff in front of him — private stuff!”

While we don’t expect the Round Mound of Rebound to make it onto the screen for a cameo in the next real installment in the Star Wars franchise, we wouldn’t mind being wrong — even if it’s just a funny outtake for the Blu-ray. Solo: A Star Wars Story will land in theaters on May 25, 2018.
