When Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comes to The CW in 2018, it won't be your classic "Sabrina the Teenage Witch."
"Yes, she's still a teenager, and still a witch, but this is going to be a very different show," Archie co-CEO and Riverdale and Sabrina executive producer Jon Goldwater teased to a packed, standing-room-only crowd at New York Comic Con. "It's very much in the vein of the current comic. It's a heck of a lot darker, more dramatic, and it has tons of action and adventure."
The current comic book series is a dark supernatural horror story, reimagining Sabrina as sort of an axis that all the other strange events and beings in Riverdale spin around. Riverdale showrunner and Archie CCO Roberto Aguire-Sacasa was confirmed as the showrunner for Chilling Adventures.
As for who will play Sabrina, "we've started casting for Sabrina the character," Goldwater announced. "You'll be able to meet her soon."
On the Archie Comics side, the publisher will launch another ongoing horror series, Jughead: The Hunger. Building off the one-shot published previously, the series features Jughead as a Werewolf.
"Jughead is always hungry," Archie Comics teased in promos for the title, "what if that hunger came from something evil?"
Frank Tieri is writing the series, and he said that while he loves Jughead the Werewolf, he's more excited about revisiting Betty, Werewolf Hunter.
"I was always more of a Betty guy than a Veronica guy. She's just so nice and has this calming effect on everyone. So having her being this Werewolf Hunter, this action-packed girl that kicks a lot of ass, is so much fun," Tieri said.
Maybe we'll get a special Halloween episode of Riverdale someday that plays with the concept.
