Chosen One of the Day: Big Barda

Last week, something kinda great happened on Twitter. Director Ava DuVernay, whose newest film A Wrinkle in Time debuts in March (and who has been asked many times about whether she plans to direct a superhero film), said that among all the possible superheroes she does, in fact, have a favorite: Big Barda.

So, who the hell is Big Barda? Only one of the greatest DC Comics heroes you've never heard of - which, if we're being honest here, is a damn tragedy.

First of all, she was created in the 1970s as one of the New Gods of Jack Kirby's Fourth World comics and Kirby actually based her personality on his wife Roz (and the interplay between her and her husband, Mister Miracle, on their own relationship).

Second, her personality is basically a more in your face version of Wonder Woman who is bigger and stronger than her husband and constantly trying to save and/or protect him, which just really makes me wish I had been friends with Jack Kirby and his wife in the 1970s.

Third, she looks like this:

The helmet alone is enough to elevate her to godlike status in my book, only she doesn't need the help because she is basically a god already. One of the New Gods from Apokalips. Yes, it's really spelled that way. Yes, it's amazing. Shut up.

Her weapon is literally called a Mega Rod because every single thing involving the New Gods sounds like it's part of a very dirty metal band circa the late 70s (Mother Box, Mega Rod, Boom Tube).

Also, she basically yells everything because everything she says is VERY IMPORTANT even if it's not.

She's a badass warrior who used to lead Darkseid's Female Furies, one of the most formidable superhero teams in the known universe and she defected because pretty much everything on Apokalips is THE WORST. She and her husband are some of the most powerful people on the planet and twice they have retired to the suburbs like very tall, very dangerous soccer parents who don't have any children but who probably have an awesome army of adorable dogs.

You know you want this movie. So, DC Comics? What are you waiting for?
