Christopher Nolan's take on Batman has been lauded for a lot of reasons, one of which is its grounded realism, despite being based on a comic book hero. But it seems that ultra-realistic Bat-outfit doesn't work exactly as in the comics, and it nearly knocked star Christian Bale out cold while filming The Dark Knight Rises.
In an interview with The Huffington Post UK, Bale revealed the (admittedly awesome) Batman suit is not nearly as comfortable as it might appear, and when the weather hits just right, it can actually choke him out.
It became so much of an issue, Bale said, that the costume designers actually tweaked the suit in later movies so he could get loose in case he couldn't breathe:
"When it gets cold the cowl is extremely tight, and it gets better the warmer I get it; it becomes more flexible. But after a couple of takes I was trying to breathe properly in my nose. I was starting to see stars and I said 'I have to take this off'. And thank God on this one I can—on Batman Begins I couldn't—so I had to get inside because I couldn't let anybody see me without the cowl. It never looks how it feels. It's so weird."It's a good thing they built in a release, because it'd have to be pretty embarrassing for Batman to survive the Joker—but be felled by a faulty costume.
