Collector's Corner: Star Wars Force Friday Special Edition

Now that the initial midnight madness of Force Friday has subsided and the pitiful sight of empty pegboard shelves at Target or Toys 'R Us has faded into distant memory, get ready for a geeky grouping of all the best Star Wars: The Force Awakens gems you may have missed out on. 

 

For you brave souls who took to the trenches and returned triumphantly with that coveted Captain Phasma action figure from Hasbro, LEGO Millennium Falcon or Sphero's app-controlled BB-8, we salute your Jedi-like determination and hope any bumps or bruises you incurred in the maelstrom have sufficiently healed.  The Force was truly with you.  Those who drove home in empty-handed dejection after waiting in line for hours, dry those tears of regret!  Just think, you're cash-rich this week, and you'll be pumped and primed when the next avalanche of restocked Star Wars toys, games and merchandise is rolled out.

SPHERO'S BB-8

This self-balancing baby was the holy grail of The Force Awakens treasures for many of the faithful, and they went fast in most retail outlets.  Sphero's BB-8 toy is an awesome app-operated droid that can be controlled from your smartphone or tablet, with the ability to simulate holographic messages, perform a series of preprogrammed moves and respond to questions.  Grab one if you see one! ($149)

 

LEGO MILLENNIUM FALCON

One of the biggest offerings from the Danish brickmasters is a huge LEGO replica of the storied Millennium Falcon as seen in the new movie.  Contains 1,329 pieces and 7 mini-figs of Rey, Finn, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Tasu Leech, BB-8 and a Kanjiklub Gang Member.   This massive building kit measures in at 23 x 15 inches, so clear a spacious landing site for this spaceship when it hits your radar.  ($149)

 

JAKKS PACIFIC 20-INCH CAPTAIN PHASMA

I'd be grinning, too, if I'd scored one of these jumbo-sized Captain Phasma action figures from Jakks Pacific.  Played by Game of Thrones' Gwendolyn Christie in the upcoming movie, this armored enforcer is embodied in a toy that features seven points of articulation at the arms, wrists, neck and waist, comes packing a wicked blaster and wears a sewn-on cape.  This line also includes a 17-inch Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren and Stormtrooper.  ($23)

 

MICRO MACHINES STAR DESTROYER FINALIZER PLAYSET

These cool self-contained Star Destroyer playsets were actually still available in some stores over the weekend if you were fortunate enough to stumble across one in the sad rubble of the toy aisles.  Based on the interior of the First Order Star Destroyer, each dagger-shaped set comes with a TIE Fighter, Poe Dameron's black X-Wing and micro figures of Kylo Ren and Finn.  ($39.95)

 

NERF FIRST ORDER STORMTROOPER BLASTER

I love this pump-action Stormtrooper Nerf Gun and can think of a hundred ways to annoy my cat with it.  Wait, I don't have a cat!  Anyway, this handsome weapon comes with 12 darts and a removable clip and is capable of firing soft salvos up to 65 feet.   ($30)

 

HOT WHEELS STAR WARS ESCAPE FROM JAKKU PLAYSET

The perfect storm of Star Wars and Hot Wheels!  This cool playset where you can re-enact the Battle of Jakku with die-cast starships spinning around a crashed First Order Star Destroyer.   Motorized action lets you pilot the ship of your choice and do a 360-degree loop using the hand controller, accented with electronic battle sounds of the light or the dark side.  Comes with one die-cast Millennium Falcon and three TIE Fighter targets.  ($40)

 

LEGO POE'S X-WING FIGHTER

A Disney Store exclusive, this quilted, faux-leather replica of Finn's Resistance Fighter's pilot's jacket inspired by The Force Awakens is available only in child sizes and decorated with an ''X-Wing Squadron," and ''Astromech Droid: BB-8'' patch appliqués, cadet collar, contrasting fabric accents, two front pockets and twin cuff buckles.  ($49.95)


 

REY'S SPEEDER BIKE AND KANAN'S Y-WING SCOUT BOMBER

Here's an excellent pair of vehicle sets that also includes one 3.75-inch action figure and accessories.   Choose either Rey's boxy speeder bike salvaged from the desert planet of Jakku accompanied by a desert-garbed Rey, or a Star Wars Rebels Y-Wing Scout Bomber armed with fireable proton bombs and laser cannons, complete with a limited-edition Kanan Jarrus figure and lightsaber. Accept this 15-inch First Order T.I.E. fighter complete with its own 3.75-inch pilot figure into your squadron of Star Wars collectibles if you can locate one.  These boxes were gone in seconds form the shelves and I can see why.  One of the new advanced attack craft in the evil First Order's fleet, this giant model fires two missile and comes packed with pilot uniform accessories. ($40)

 

 

LEGO KYLO REN'S COMMAND SHUTTLE

Here's a most impressive LEGO building kit recreating Kylo Ren's ominous First Order shuttle, comprised of 1005 pieces. It comes with six minifigs, including Ren with crossguard light saber, General Hux, three First Order officers and a First Order Stormtrooper.  Measures 19 X 15 inches.($119)

 

DISNEY STORE KYLO REN'S LIGHTSABER

Here's another Disney Store exclusive that vanished quickly from display stands around the world on Force Friday.  It's a nicely detailed impact plastic replica of Kylo Ren's controversial crossguard lightsaber, with growling electronic sounds, 31-inch illuminating blade, battle-clash effects, motion-sensors and requires 3 AA batteries.  I gotta get one!  ($29.95)

 

FURBACCA

Hasbro's classic Furby gets a Star Wars makeover hybrid with this Chewbacca toy that can hum the legendary Star Wars theme, interact with users through built-in sensors and an app designed for either Apple or Android phones and tablets in which owners can feed, bathe and play games with the Wookie.  Cool LCD screens built into the eyes display images of Imperial Star Destroyers and X-Wing Fighters.  ($80)

 

BATTLE ACTION MILLENNIUM FALCON

This enormous hybrid NERF toy comes with figures of Finn, Chewbacca and BB-8 and comes armed wth a pop-up cannon that fires NERF Elite darts at unsuspecting relatives.  Equipped with a turbolaser turret, light-up LED cannons, hyperdrive sound effects, and a slide-out playset area featuring a holochess board and smuggling compartment for all 3.75-inch action figures to hide inside.  ($120)

 

ASSAULT WALKER AND ELITE SPEEDER BIKE VEHICLE SETS

Here are two more 3.75-inch vehicle sets that come complete with accessories and a single action figure.  Choose the First Order's new  Assault Walker mobile cavalry unit boxed with a special edition Stormtrooper Sergeant figure, or a black and red Elite Speeder Bike utilized by experienced scouts and high-risk missions, packed with a special edition Elite Stormtrooper figure.  These bargain-priced sets were the first to fly off the shelves after the individual 3.75-inch action figures vanished.  ($20 each)
