There have been rumblings that former Firefly captain Nathan Fillion might pop up in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and now director James Gunn has confirmed it's true — he’s just not playing who you think.

The big rumor that ramped up once word leaked that Fillion had a cameo was that he might play intergalactic Marvel hero Nova, aka Richard Rider, in a post-credit scene to set up his potential entry into a future sequel or perhaps a full-fledged Nova spinoff. According to Gunn, that is (sadly) not the case.

With the rumor spreading like wildfire, the director took to Twitter in an effort to clear the air. Basically: Yes, Fillion has a “very small fun” cameo. No, he’s not playing Nova. Sigh.

The rumors of my pal @NathanFillion playing Nova in #guardiansofthegalaxy have been greatly (and entirely) exaggerated. Sorry, humans.

@STARS_TyranT: Are the rumours true that he has some part in the film?” @nathanfillion has a very small fun cameo he did as a favor to me.

Obviously, we’re psyched to hear Fillion will finally be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we’d have hoped for something a little bigger. Who knows, Gunn is a heck of a trickster (and Joss Whedon does have a little pull at Marvel, ya know), so maybe we’ll get a little Firefly nod with Captain Mal himself? Hey, the world of Guardians does look fairly swashbuckling. Here’s hoping.

How do you think Fillion will pop up?
