Spoiler warning! If you haven't read last week's issue of Nightwing yet, don't blame me for what happens next!
For a cranky loner, Batman sure has a big family, and it may be getting bigger. Bruce Wayne may soon find himself an adopted grandfather, because in Nightwing #16 by Tim Seeley and Javier Fernandez, the original Robin found out that he may soon be a father! Though things quickly took a turn for the complicated, as they often do in the lives of romantically-involved superheroes.
In recent issues, Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing, has been dating a woman named Shawn Tsang, an artist in Blüdhaven who used to be a Z-list villain called The Defacer. While Nightwing was out giving a gang of terrible robbers known as The Horsemen a reason for their long faces, he missed a call from Shawn, who left a voicemail informing him that she was late — and "not for work" — and asked him to bring home a pregnancy test.
However, when he arrived back at her apartment, she was gone, and one of her paintings had been defaced with the word 'Daddy' and a book had been left out. The book was The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, about the hero from whom Dick hadn't gotten his first super-alias, and inside were coordinates to the grave Richard the Lionheart, a king with no heirs.
It's an ominous note to have left things on, and who knows if the "Batman of Blüdhaven" (as Damian sarcastically calls him in the issue) will make it to France in time to avert tragedy and save his love and — potentially — his unborn child. Luckily Damian is ready to help, and he stole the Batmobile the pair used when they were Batman and Robin — and it can fly.
Dick's pulled off some high-wire feats (though none so harrowing as my getting through this whole article without a single joke about his first name) before, but will he be able to save his child and then be a father? Find out in the first part of this life-altering story for Dick Grayson titled "Nightwing Must Die!" in Nightwing #16, on sale now, and continuing in Nightwing #17, out March 15!
