The CW’s Supernatural is getting ready to kick off its 13th season of demon-hunting and wisecracking, and the latest trailer tries to make the concept feel as fresh as it did back in the early 2000s.
We get an opening voiceover from Dean praying to God for help, leading into a throwback intro that lays out the elevator pitch for the series (two brothers fight monsters! and drive a cool car!) that has kept fans coming back since George W. Bush was president.
If you’ve enjoyed the past decade or so of Supernatural, this new run should be right up your alley. Judging by what we see here, it almost feels like they’re going for a back-to-basics approach, which has been the trajectory since the show took a big swing with a story that focused on God himself and the forces kicking around at the time of creation.
There’s something oddly refreshing about seeing the gang going after some old-school, low-level baddies.
Here’s the synopsis for the new season:
The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues as SUPERNATURAL enters its thirteenth season. Sam and Dean have spent their lives on the road, battling supernatural threats that include everything from the demon that killed their mother to the usual vampires, ghosts, shape-shifters, angels and fallen gods rampaging over the land. They've come out on top with the help of allies, both human and supernatural, but every victory comes at a price.
Supernatural Season 13 opens Thursday, October 12.
