The story of death row inmate Leon Cooley will come to a head after two seasons on TNT's Saving Grace in the season finale, "I Believe in Angels," which airs today at 10 p.m. ET, creator and executive producer Nancy Miller told SCI FI Wire.
"Will Grace save Leon Cooley? Grace is going to take a major step in her journey. You don't want to miss that step she's going to take," Miller said in an exclusive telephone interview.
Saving Grace follows the story of troubled and self-destructive Oklahoma City major crimes detective Grace Hanadarko (Holly Hunter), who finds herself ending up with a Last Chance Angel named Earl (Leon Rippy). Since the beginning of the series, Grace has shared the same Last Chance Angel with Leon Cooley, who's on a journey of his own. Cooley (Bokeem Woodbine) has struggled to find redemption behind bars as his execution date approaches.
As with all Saving Grace episodes, there will be a crime to be solved as well. "It's a robbery where an 80-year-old woman kills an intruder in her house with a shotgun she calls Baby," Miller said. "In Oklahoma they have a law called 'Make My Day.' You come on my property, I can kill you, and so it's about that law. Was this old woman correct in killing this guy? And then there's a twist to that story," she said.
But the main focus of the episode will be that Cooley's execution date has arrived. "There's really a surprising twist that will touch your heart," Miller said. "Something about Leon Cooley that we had no idea about." And don't miss the first few minutes, Miller added. "There is a shocking, shocking teaser. The teaser's great, and it sets you off on this roller coaster of an episode. Just to see these performances by Holly, Leon and Bokeem ... I mean, they'll take your breath away."
Saving Grace is scheduled to return to TNT with a third season in June.
