Looks like one of TV's biggest sitcom stars may have just stepped into the middle of a corporate war.
On Wednesday, The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco sent out the tweet below promoting the new Hopper DVR service offered by DISH Network.
That seems all well and good, except that Cuoco works for CBS, and CBS is at present locked in a major battle with DISH over the Hopper's ability to skip commercials altogether (and potentially rob CBS and other networks of revenue). So when the tweet was unexpectedly deleted, DISH immediately accused CBS of forcing Cuoco to take it down.
“It’s disappointing that CBS -- once the exemplar of editorial independence and innovation -- continues to use its heavy hand to hold back progress from consumers,” Joe Clayton, DISH president and CEO, said in a statement.
Clayton and DISH also claim that the tweet received a huge response shortly after its posting, proving that consumers want the Hopper and therefore CBS should get out of the way.
“It’s a shame that CBS, despite its legacy, feels it needs to thwart this kind of consumer demand," Clayton said.
Now CBS has fired back with both an outright denial that they forced Cuoco to remove the tweet and a jab at DISH.
"Once again, Joe Clayton demonstrates his dubious gift for hyperbole and hucksterism," the network said in a statement. "No demands were made, but it’s clear that Dish’s culture of fabrication is alive and well."
No word yet from Cuoco herself on why the tweet was taken down, or whose idea it was, but clearly she has unwittingly fanned the flame in this battle between two TV titans. Which side do you come down on?
