Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sadly dropped its Ghost Rider storyline due to budget issues, its LMD (life-model decoy) plot has brought some interesting twists and turns — particularly when it comes to Director Jeffrey Mace.

Spoilers below.

As we learned a few episodes ago, Mace, the Inhuman leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., is a human after all. His super-strength doesn't come from Kree genes. Instead, he injects a serum that gives him temporary powers. In a nod to the extended Marvel Universe, that serum was supposed to turn him into another Captain America. It failed.

Worse than that, each dose puts him one step closer into heart-attack territory.

Despite his lack of martial ability, Mace is still brave, even when under Anton Ivanov's blade, as we see in this clip for tonight's episode, "The Man Behind the Shield." Anton (aka The Superior) isn't interrogating him, just showing Mace his utter contempt. But he's using a knife to make his point.

Mace may not be Inhuman ... but he is strong. Check it out.
