Disney’s upcoming big-screen adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1963 Newbery Medal-winning classic fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time has found its young lead actress.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 13-year-old actress Storm Reid (12 Years a Slave) has nabbed the lead role of Meg Murry in the movie, directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma), with a script from Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee. She will join Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, who are all currently in various stages of negotiations to get on board the fantasy film.
A Wrinkle in Time follows the story of Murry, “a young girl traumatized by the disappearance of her scientist father years before. She finds herself on an interplanetary journey with a schoolmate and her younger brother to find her father. They are aided by a trio of supernatural beings, Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Winfrey).” While on her journey, she meets some fantastical creatures along the way.
The casting of Storm Reid highlights Disney’s ever-growing efforts to add more race diversity to its movie casts. They’ve already made L’Engle’s main book characters either black or mixed race, making the Murry family a mixed-race one. The Studio is also said to be looking for a non-white actor to play the part of Meg’s schoolmate, Calvin O’Keefe
